White Rann of Kutch
— Salt desert escape, Kutch district
The largest salt desert in the world turns the colour of mercury at dawn. Come in winter — November to February — when the Rann Utsav runs and the temperatures are survivable. Drive up the night before and sleep at a tent city. The sunrise from the salt flat is something you will attempt to describe for the rest of your life.
The drive from Ahmedabad is five to six hours on the NH-41 towards Bhuj. The last hour goes through Kutchi villages and scrubland that is already extraordinary. The white salt flat begins to appear about 20km before Dhordo and nothing really prepares you for the scale of it.
Accommodation options range from basic government guesthouses to premium tent cities with room service and folk performances. The Rann Utsav (November to February) dramatically increases both crowds and quality of facilities. Off-season is quieter and cheaper but the heat is serious — 45°C+ in summer.
